Bald Eagle
Although our national bird, the bald eagle was once on the endangered species list. Their numbers have soared over the years and they are doing great now.
Gray Wolf
This is a species that is stuck in the northern part of these forests because of human hunting and our need to wipeout top predators in our enviroment. They are still currently on the endangered list. But the one organism who has not come off the endangered species list is the gray wolf. They were put on the endangered species list in 1988. They have been hunted and also have been driven out of their homes by humans. Wildlife organizations are trying to keep them protected.
Deforestation
Although not on the endangered species list, most of these trees are cut down for human needs and wants. This destroys all habitat for the animals which could drive them to extinction.
Red Wolf
Once numerous throughout the world, they became extinct in the wild in 1980 and were put into a captive breeding program to save the species. They are still critically endangered but have been breeding successfully in the wild.
Bison
Numbered once in the 60- 100 million range, their numbers were reduced to 1,000 in the late 1800's. Today there are none in deciduous forests but conservation efforts have saved them.
